About This Crochet Pattern
The secret of this tiny ghost is its two-layer edge: the decorative front loops create a floating ruffle, while the unused back loops let you close and stuff the bottom securely. That means you can get the airy look of a little ghost without leaving a hole underneath.
Keep your ghost plain white for a classic look, work in cream for a vintage Halloween decoration, or add an optional mini hat using the witch-hat accessory explained in our companion witch article. If you use a styled photo with a hat or pumpkin basket, those extras are not part of the basic ghost pattern below.
Project at a Glance
| Pattern detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Project | One-piece stuffed ghost with a decorative scalloped edge |
| Difficulty | Adventurous beginner: MR, sc, shaping and FLO/BLO |
| Construction | Top-down body, front-loop edging, back-loop bottom closure |
| Finished size | Varies by yarn, hook and tension |
| Safety | Embroidered face is recommended for younger children |
Materials and Tools
Choose a light or medium yarn in white or cream. Opaque, compact stitches make the ghost silhouette look smooth and keep stuffing hidden.
- White or cream yarn suitable for amigurumi
- A crochet hook that makes a firm fabric (for example, 3.0–3.5 mm for many DK yarns)
- Fiberfill stuffing and one stitch marker
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Black yarn for embroidered eyes and a smile
- Optional pink yarn for cheeks or a separate small Halloween hat
Yarn and hook tip: Start with a hook that produces a fabric tight enough to hide the stuffing, but do not pull the stitches so tight that your hands become uncomfortable. Your finished size will vary with yarn and tension.
Stitches and Abbreviations (US)
| Short form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MR | Magic ring |
| sc | Single crochet |
| inc | Increase: 2 sc in one stitch |
| dec | Invisible decrease, or sc2tog |
| sl st | Slip stitch |
| hdc | Half double crochet |
| dc | Double crochet |
| FLO / BLO | Front loops only / back loops only |
Unless noted otherwise, crochet in a continuous spiral and move your stitch marker up at the start of each round. The number in parentheses shows the total stitch count after that round.
Full Written Cute Crochet Ghost Pattern
Use white or cream yarn and mark the beginning of each round. The decorative hem uses the front loops of one round; the base later uses the unused back loops of that same round.
Part 1 — Crochet the Ghost Shape
| Round | Instructions | Sts |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 sc in MR | 6 |
| 2 | Inc in every stitch | 12 |
| 3 | (1 sc, inc) × 6 | 18 |
| 4 | (2 sc, inc) × 6 | 24 |
| 5–8 | Sc around for 4 rounds | 24 |
| 9 | (3 sc, inc) × 6 | 30 |
| 10 | Sc around | 30 |
| 11 | (4 sc, inc) × 6 | 36 |
| 12 | Sc around | 36 |
Before you begin the hem, decide where you want the eyes and smile. It is easiest to embroider the face while the body is still open and you can hide the thread ends inside.
Part 2 — Make the Wavy Ghost Hem
Work this round through the front loops only of Round 12. Keep the unused back loops available for the hidden base.
| Round | Instructions | Sts |
|---|---|---|
| 13 — hem | Repeat (sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) × 6 in the front loops of Round 12 | 36 |
Fasten off the hem yarn. Gently spread the six small waves with your fingers; do not pull the edge flat.
Part 3 — Close the Bottom Behind the Hem
Reattach your yarn to the unused back loop of a stitch from Round 12. Work this base in a spiral inside the decorative hem.
| Round | Instructions | Sts |
|---|---|---|
| Base 1 | (4 sc, dec) × 6 | 30 |
| Base 2 | (3 sc, dec) × 6 | 24 |
| Base 3 | (2 sc, dec) × 6 | 18 |
| Base 4 | (1 sc, dec) × 6; add stuffing before the opening gets smaller | 12 |
| Base 5 | Dec × 6; fasten off with a tail | 6 |
Draw the yarn tail through the front loops of the last six stitches, close the small hole and hide the end inside. Do not overstuff the bottom: a flatter base helps the ghost stand.
Part 4 — Embroider a Sweet Little Face
- Mark two eye positions on the upper front of the ghost. Check that the decorative waves hang below the face.
- Using black yarn, sew tiny vertical eyes or small curved closed-eye shapes.
- Add a curved smiling mouth, then hide the thread tails inside the head.
- For rosy cheeks, add one or two small pink stitches under each eye.
Optional — A Witch-Hat Accessory
Want to style your ghost like the Pinterest image? Follow our mini crochet witch hat tutorial, and scale the hat to suit your ghost. The hat is an add-on, not included in the basic ghost body instructions.
Assembly and Finishing Tips
- Spread the six decorative hem waves evenly, separating any loops that curl under the body.
- Check that the bottom is fully closed and no stuffing shows through.
- Use a tapestry needle to secure and hide all yarn tails.
- Set the ghost on a flat surface and gently reshape the base so it stands upright.
Do not work both loops for the decorative hem. Those saved back loops are needed for the bottom closure; keeping them free gives the ghost a cleaner, floating skirt.
Troubleshooting and Customization
My ghost looks like a ball. What can I adjust?
The straight upper rounds create the head, while the increases near the bottom create its floating shape. Do not skip the wider rounds or the six-part hem.
My ruffle disappears under the ghost.
Check whether you worked the decorative round in front loops only. Also avoid stuffing the base so firmly that it pushes the hem downward.
The bottom is too puffy.
Use a little less stuffing near the closing rounds and press the base gently against a table while reshaping the figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a no-sew crochet ghost?
The ghost body and hem are crocheted continuously, but a small amount of embroidery and needle finishing is still used.
Can I turn it into a hanging ornament?
Yes. Attach a secure yarn loop through the top and check its strength before hanging it.
Are the witch hat and pumpkin bucket included?
No. This pattern covers the ghost body and embroidered face. Decorative accessories are optional separate projects.
